Despite documentation, no columns, only rows

I put the following into the content area of my static page:
[column width=”60%” margin_right=”10px” ]content[/column]
[column width=”35%”]content[/column]
[end_columns]The example is right off of another post.
What I get is this:

content
Not quite what I expected – each column takes the full page width and essentially becomes two rows.
Should this be inserted someplace else? (yea, I know what you’re thinking – be nice!)
