• Howdy, folks!
Is there any interest in holding a design “contest” for WP templates/skins/layouts? I recall reading about Blogger doing something like that. I thought it might be a fun way to get the community working on their design ideas. The WP members could vote on their favourite designs, and perhaps some or all of the designs could be included with the basic WP install package.
I think that not only the design of the site is important, but the way the skin/template is documented would be part of the judging, too. I would even volunteer to host the contest on my site, if needed, as well as flesh out the concept and rules, with the help of all those interested. Maybe this would be a good thing to run in the New Year, after the holidays.
    Comments?
    Craig.

  • I have a question. If we can’t touch the index php, how are we supposed to do anything creative? For one thing, you have all of those ul’s and li’s in there and they are actually holding me back (Well, not really. I hacked the **** out of it anyway). I mean for one thing, the category link in the actual post is an li and I really don’t want three lines as opposed to one and it’s doing that with the font size I’m using, Plus, I don’t really need them. Having things like that hardcoded in the php is probably not a good thing as far as usability. I had to go into b2template.functions.php so I could actually make my code smaller in index.php by taking out the ones it kept inserting whether I wanted them or not. Which brings me to the main point once again. How are we supposed to do, say, a three column layout when to do that you have to hack into index.php? Doesn’t having those hardcoded items defeat the purpose of a template driven site?

artios – feel free to nab the css and images if you want – just drop me a line so I can have a wee nose when its done

God that Calenders a pain in the @rse

Liquibyte – I agree it would be much better if each individual menu item existed in their own div – but the aim of this thing is to see what can be done with changing a thing – I’m going to try a three column design next – I think the limitation will be that the two menu columns will need to be side by side – but I’ll try to think about this.

I’ve worked out how to do a three column design with content in middle and menu’s flanking both sides but at the mo. its looking really rough – I’ll post it whem I get it vaguely sorted.

Dave, your right mate there is a complete lack of any handy div’s etc that would make this actually useful/easier…the closest I’ve got to a three column one with the markup as is…

Not an entry merely me just seeing if I could do this – This can’t be the only way to do this (???) any thoughts guys.
    # menu is fixed width, #menu ul is fixed width in such a way that only 2 #menu ul can fit on a row causing it to wrap using float left giving the appearance of a 3 column design – probelm is you don’t use the space effectively (you lose the equivelent of ul padding on the right) Limiting the size of the center block. – You also get scrollbar is width of window is less than #menu width although the text filling the spot won’t go that far over.

Is this thread messed up of my browser is kaput?

    Craig.

My favorite so far is https://www.lineages.co.uk/chris/comp2/index.htm I like the original idea of a menu at the bottom. I only saw it in Firebird.

This thread is kaput I think davidchait’s post contained some html which has caused it to go mad

contains unclosed li and ul tags

I’ve started a new thread for this – hope noone minds

Sorry all! Was commenting from work while waiting for a compile to finish, wasn’t even thinking about tags embedded… oops! Wish it would have generated a warning (“Unclosed tags in post!”), and made me clean it up at that time, instead of wasting everyone else’s… ??
Fixed, so you can now easily read my lengthy breakdown of the index markup.
