    Howdy, folks!
Is there any interest in holding a design “contest” for WP templates/skins/layouts? I recall reading about Blogger doing something like that. I thought it might be a fun way to get the community working on their design ideas. The WP members could vote on their favourite designs, and perhaps some or all of the designs could be included with the basic WP install package.
I think that not only the design of the site is important, but the way the skin/template is documented would be part of the judging, too. I would even volunteer to host the contest on my site, if needed, as well as flesh out the concept and rules, with the help of all those interested. Maybe this would be a good thing to run in the New Year, after the holidays.
    Comments?
    Craig.

    Craig,
are you talking about adaptions of the original template, or also about ways to include WP functions in other designs??
    Generally: good idea!

i had like to see contest for modifying the css file to create entirely new layouts. that ways index.php remains as it is… ??

    (@sushubh)

well i suppose if the layout looks kool without images, why not use it. Blogs are content oriented! ??
and about design, it becomes more challenging when u make a custom CSS to generate a whole new layout from the existing code. like the charleen design by 1 of the developers (??) here. but as i say that, i would make this clear that this is IMHO! ??

OK, well, I’ll participate whether it be just plain .css or whether it will be a full new design. Its just that css designs often look like a site designed for a 6 year old. I’ll have to make some grungy and serious! I do hope images are allowed though.
…waiting patiently for the rules and competition end-date.

Sushubh is right…just using CSS can mean a HUGE difference, even if the content is totally the same. When I think of a web site design, I think of all the elements that go together to create a site are part of the design/layout, whatever you want to call it.
I would categorise a site that incorporates WP as being different from a site that uses nothing but WP. In that case, I’d suggest two categories for the competition.
If you want to see the power of what CSS can do, hop over to this site, and try on a whole bunch of the styles. The content of each design is EXACTLY the same, but the layouts and styles applied make every version of that same content unique…. https://www.csszengarden.com/ use the links in the right-hand menu to change the site design. You will be amazed at the stuff people have come up with!

OK, https://www.csszengarden.com/ seems to be based on graphics design as well as CSS… so Im still a little confused about what we can and cant do.
Draw out some rules and guidelines.

    Sushubh

    (@sushubh)

exactly my point. and it becomes easier for laymen like me to adapt to the new funky design ??

I’d like to mention that the template for the css zen garden got a lot more non-semantical markup (read: tons of divs) than the default wordpress template to hook your css to.
Using just the default template i’d say you are rather limited in your design possibilities, perhaps it would be a good idea to create a new template with some extended design-friendly markup for the competition.

    No graphics ??
(But some might argue, no class either!)

denyerec: ur site look weird in Opera. 2 scrollbars plus scrolling does nto work.

OK… well I better get reading on CSS then. I only have a basic knowledge of it, but its enough to do exactly what I want it to do. Does code matter? Does it have to be as efficient as CSS allows and valid CSS etc?… or is this all about the design? Also, I think there should be a limit to how many images can be used.

IMO it _has_ to be valid CSS. Minimize the use of hacks and try to be as efficient as you can get away with ??
