NextGen is telling me that some legacy templates are deprecated. The link to the documentation provided me a little bit more information, but the Imagely page “Basic Thumbnail Gallery With Captions” still tells me that I can point to them when I want captions to appear beneath my thumbnails. Is there any feature built into NextGen, Free or Pro, that allows simple captions beneath the thumbnails without requiring me to write custom code in a new template?

  • I have already updated to Imagely 2.0 (their new all in one template)
I usually run with Pro Mosaic galleries but I switched one over to Basic Thumbnails to see what was what.
Under ‘Customize Display Settings’ I set ‘Select View’ to ‘default-view.php’ and the thumbnails displayed with captions with no issues. (It also worked fine with the ‘Legacy’ setting.)
    You should be fine!

    Hi HollyKNY,

We are re-implementing the legacy templates as new views in the next NextGEN release so you will be able to just change an option in your display settings to keep your current galleries without writing your own templates.

Thanks, @milfodd and @benjaminowens, for the information – good to read. Thanks!

@benjaminowens Does this mean we don’t have to rewrite our legacy templates like the current release warns us of:

NextGEN Gallery will soon be removing support for custom styles and legacy templates.

    ???

If you are using the built in ‘legacy’ templates then no; all you will need to do is change your setting to use the new ‘view’ templates. If you have customizations beyond the defaults NextGEN ships with you will need to update your PHP templates unfortunately.

I will say though that we aren’t removing legacy templates immediately; at the moment we’re making people aware that we will be dropping them so they can prepare. We will also likely move that feature into a companion plugin for users that still require it, but it won’t be part of NextGEN itself.

    Hi Benjamin,
I am a Plus user and use all Pro versions of thumbnail, slideshow and album. Do I need to be concerned with this legacy template in Basic Thumbnail?

    Hi @francoc30

There is nothing for you to worry about.

    Great. Thanks.
