• I have over 660 items in my trash (down from 1,000+). Deleting them has been an incredibly painful process:

    1. Open Posts
    2. Click Trash (to select just items in my trash)
    3. Select Title (which selects 20 items from that page)
    4. Select “Delete Permanently”
    5. Click Apply
    6. Wait
    7. Wait some more
    8. Land on Internal Error 500 page
    9. Click “Back” on browser
    10. Refresh Trash list, notice only 10 have been deleted (not 20), repeat from #3 onward.

I have installed Empty Trash, so I do get the Empty Trash button. But, when I click that, it deletes just ONE post from the trash.

Any and all suggestions welcome. I have automatic posts being generated, so I need a cost effective way to delete mass posts, and then to nuke them from the trash bin. Currently, It’s taken me two days to delete 400 posts from the Trash. And, I’m. Going. Crazy.

  • If you have access to phpMyAdmin, you could try this:

A safer way, perhaps, would be to try to select more than 20 at a time by changing the pagination number under screen options. Here’s a screencast to show you what I mean https://take.ms/vv77N. I’m not sure, tho, if you’re site will freak out because of the large number of posts at one time.

Thanks Paul. I do have access to phpAdmin but the code I copied and pasted (after backing up) didn’t do a thing. Like the other poster on that forum, I have just enough knowledge to make me dangerous.

Also, thanks for the video link. I changed the selection to 50.

Again, no avail. So, I plodded along and did the “delete trash” button, which nuked seven posts at a time.

The magic number appears to be 300. Once I got my trash down to under 700, I can now delete 48 at a time. Woot!!

Note to self: Smarten the freak up! Clean as you go…

Again, thanks Paul for your suggestions. The video definitely helped because now I know how to mass delete more than 20 at a time.
