    Hi,

I’m trying to help a friend out with installing WordPress on her shared hosting.

By the looks of things, the hosting provider gives a pretty basic level of access and uses Confixx, which is something I’m not familiar with.

WordPress is intended to replace a DreamWeaver site that she previously had. I used the Software Client within Confixx to install WordPress, but have hit some snags, so I’d like to “wipe” the folder that everything is presently contained in (/root/html)

Is this an OK thing to do? Normally, I’d trial this myself, but seeing as it’s someone else’s, I thought I better check.

    Thanks,

  • Assuming you’re referring to the folder that you installed WordPress into, then yes – deleting that folder would be OK. You’d also need to delete or empty the database that you set up for use with WordPress.

Thanks for your response. That is really helpful.

It seems as though I cannot delete/add anything from the root / directory but only add /delete from the next folder which is html, where wordpress directory is located – because of permissions.

I have it all running now with the insertion of an htaccess file but all the wordpress indexing is a mess and the home page still seems to link back to the old index.html still. Also, permalinks are a total mess that cant be fixed with the usual htaccess rewrite mod stuff…

Kinda wondering if I deleted everything WordPress with Filezilla and the old parts of the site, if this would be the best fix or if I am going to face the same problems because of permissions?

Its been a long night – hope I am making sense!

Can you delete the WP folder?

I could as its not located in the root – is this sensible?

Yes – that should be fine.

Thank you! Will update as to how it works out

Managed to move the index.php file into the /html directory and have the website linking up properly now instead of deleting it. The only problem lies with the permalinks not being able to be changed from the default setting in wordpress no matter what I out in the htaccess file.

Still might need a fresh install but for now, we are see what we can do with it the way it is.

Sorry? What index.php file? What is it that you are trying to do?

    Sorry, should have explained better.

I have managed to put a copy of the index.php file in the directory containing WP and it sorted out all the links on the site – they now link up link normal. I also managed to put a .htaccess file in the same directory and that now redirects to the directory containing wp directory – currently the only problem that remains is the inability to update permalinks in WordPress without getting a 404 error – so, I am thinking that there is no need for a complete delete and re-install as we have it working perfectly except for the permalinks.

I have checked the .htaccess and it has the rewrite permissions in there, not sure why I can’t update that. So, not the same problem I started the thread with at all – but thats the full update.

What are you trying to do exactly?

All I need now is to be able to change the permalinks from the default in wordpress to Post name setting – but every time I change it from anything other than the default the website then gets a 404 error.

Check with your hosts that mod_rewrite is running on your server.

Thanks – I will get in touch with them and find out, I am guessing this is probably the problem.
