So I installed my first subsite at mydomain.com/subdomain/

I then tried to map this to another domain and couldn’t get it to work right, so I figured I’d start over. I deleted the site and tried again. Unfortunately this time the subsite does work at all, I just get a directory listing when I go the subsite URL.

So I figured I must have done something wrong and was about to delete this second attempt when I saw this message

I’m sure I want to permanently disable my site, and I am aware I can never get it back or use ascendancyconsulting.com/dreambusiness/ again.

I am assuming this has somethig to do with why the second attempt to reinstall the subsite didn’t work at all on the front-end.

But this message alerts me to a big problem. 1st of all I didn’t see the message when I deleted the first subsite at this same directory (because I deleted from network admin and the message only shows up when deleting from subsite admin).

But the problem is that the subsite directory was specifically chosen as the best choice after doing SEO research. For best results I really MUST use the original subdirecectory! But according to this, because I already deleted the first one, I can not. There must be a way?

Is there any way that I can still use this same directory for the subsite?

FYI: That’s a subFOLDER not a subDOMAIN, and yes it matters ??

What did you do to try and map it? What plugin did you use? What ERROR did you get? It’s really impossible for us to just guess.

I deleted the site and tried again. Unfortunately this time the subsite does work at all, I just get a directory listing when I go the subsite URL.

There shouldn’t be an actual folder there at all. How did you make the subsite? It’s just made within WordPress’s network admin screen, right? If there’s a FOLDER with that name on your server, remove it.

I’m sure I want to permanently disable my site, and I am aware I can never get it back or use ascendancyconsulting.com/dreambusiness/ again.

That’s not a WordPress default alert…. It sounds like you’re making separate folders as whole installs of WP instead of subsites.

    O yeah ?? I meant to say sub-directory.

The problem was that I had added the subsites domain as an addon domain and assigned it to the directory of the subsite URL within the parent site folder.

Turns out that for the domain mapping to work I don’t need an addon domain I just need to assign an A Record for the DNS.

The problem itself was coming from having a folder in the same directory as the subsite installation. Once I deleted the empty domain folder my subsite started showing up again. Problem solved.
