Deleted .htaccess

    After showing hidden files, I changed the name of the .htaccess file in FileZilla to htaccess.txt (I was trying to fix my permalinks and was following advice from another forum to do this, I also changed the numeric value from 644 to 666) However, when I renamed .htaccess to htaccess.txt in FileZilla the whole file was rewritten to this: 

    # Switch rewrite engine off in case this was installed under HostPay.
RewriteEngine Off

SetEnv DEFAULT_PHP_VERSION 5

DirectoryIndex index.cgi index.php

# BEGIN WordPress

# END WordPress

    Now when I try to access my site I get a 404 error.
    I’m a n00b and I’m learning by trial and error, but if anyone could advise me that would be really appreciated. (I was only trying to get my permalinks to work)
