    Hello,

I’ve deleted one category that had quite a few subcategories. I (erroneously) thought that by deleting the main category, all the subcategories would be deleted as well.

    That didn’t happen.

Unfortunately, I’m unable to delete the subcategories now because they’re no longer listed in the Manage/Categories page — though they continue to clutter my “categories” list whenever I write a new post.

How can I find those subcategories so I can delete them?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

  • how do you feel about trawling through your database manually looking for them?

if you don’t mind the sound of that — look at a plugin called phpMyAdmin – which funnily enough, provides phpMyAdmin in case your host doesn’t offer it.

With that, you can fairly easily traverse your DB looking for the categories in question. It should be a fairly simple matter to set their parent to another category, then go delete them in the WP interface.

    Thank you.
It sounded scary — but I went to my host’s phpMyAdmin, headed to the wp_…_taxonomy (can’t remember what was between “wp” and “taxonomy”) and deleted the ghost sub-categories from there.
It was much easier than I thought.

yep, it’s fairly easy – I normally don’t encourage first-timers to actually delete anything there, but it really is pretty simple once you get over the whole database thing.

    congratulations ??
