Deleted Categories still show

Resubmitted as the earlier case was marked resolved – but I have discovered a solution so I am reposting in case anyone else has the same issue. Fix is at the bottom

I needed to do a complete update of our Product Categories. This is the process I used

1. I deleted all the existing product cats
2. I checked the product categories list. All products had been reassigned as Uncategorized and all the existing categories had gone
3. I imported a product list with the new categories
4. The Product Category List showed all the new categories with the correct number of products assigned to them
5. It still does not show any of the old categories. As far as the Product Categories list is concerned, the old categories have been deleted

However, when I go into Add Product, the categories window shows the new categories and SOME, but not all, of the old categories.

Solution:
The issue was a display one, in Products > Categories. While my 29 genuine categories were the only ones visible in the list, I noticed that the number at the top of the list was 41. There were 12 categories that were not displaying (and there was no page 2 to go to)

So I searched for one of the deleted items and it was displayed. I deleted it and used the same technique to display and delete all 12.

The problem is now solved.
