Deleted Author role and now cannot get users back into the "author" dropdown

So I am running a multi author website and I was customizing the user roles using wp-members plugin. I removed the default “Author” role and now, even though all permissions are the same I can not get my users to show up in the Author dropdown in order to assign them credit for the posts they write.

I have worked around this for today by changing the user to admin and then she showed up in the drop down and the other posts that she has written are still attributed to her but I cannot edit the author on new posts.

I have searched the issue and found some potential solutions but they involve editing core php files and well, I’m not a developer so I’m trying to stay away from that.

I am sure this is a pretty simple fix but I am lost. Any suggestions?
