In the next version, would it be possible to add an option to automatically delete/overwrite the original images after the conversion to WebP has taken place?
    Something like this plugin does.

Many shared hosting environments have an Inode limit, and your plugin actually doubles the number of files uploaded.

And taking into consideration that since v5.8 WordPress officially supports WebP, a setting that would allow us to delete the original files and only keep the WebP ones, would be just amazing!

    Thanks!

    Hello,

WebP is still not fully supported in Safari which is the most used browser by Apple users, so you still need a fallback image: https://caniuse.com/webp

I’ll take a look closer at what is the issue there on Safari and I’ll consider your idea, but right now I’m very busy, so give me a few weeks…

    Thanks ??

    @kubiq Thanks for the reply.

To make your work easier, there are already some plugins that accomplish this, but they all have some limitations as it follows:

    • WebP 1
    • Has an option to replace image files with WebP when adding new media, and delete the original image file.
    • It also replaces all URLs in the content.
    • BUT, it doesn’t support WooCommerce and the plugin development is defunct
    • Automatically modifies the .htaccess file at install and uninstall. Great feature for usability!
    • Has an option to automatically delete all WebP files at uninstall.

If you want, you can take inspiration from these 2 and make a mega plugin that would dominate them all, as we all like your plugin more!

Also, Safari Web supports WebP since September 2020, so there’s really no need for the fallback anymore.
Plus, the setting to replace the original files should be optional, with a notice that it’s irreversible and not all browsers 100% support it.

    Have a great day!

It is possible now in version 2.0
After update you may need to deactivate the plugin and activate it back
