    Hi,

If I delete categories in the database, will it automatically reset them to the default category?

I am afraid to do this because I don’t want to break anything, so I thought I would ask first.

Why do you have to mess around in the database? You can delete any category from the WP admin panel.

What if there are SO many that you want to try to compress it? Before the tagging was good, and convert categories to tags, I used WAY too many categories. I now want to pare it down.

Doing manual work on the database is very, very, not recommended. Use the admin interface. Really. It’s quite easy to screw things up if you try to do it yourself, categories are a lot more complex than they used to be, since they got mixed in with tagging.

i have the same question because there is one category that doesn’t appear in the admin panel but is on the site… i can’t delete it and if i try to create one with the same name it says category do exist…

deleting the cat in phpmyadmin sounds like a good idea at first but now i don’t know anymore…

let’s try to explain thsi better

I used a category ‘xxx’ and deleted it. Now it doesn’t appear in the category list. Great.

But i want to use it again so i try to re-create it. But. I have this message :
    Category allready exist.

    Any idea ?

i just installed WP-Cat plugin and thru it i can see the ‘xxx’ category but when i select it i have a message : Bad category number
