Defining a slider image for a static home page

Help please! I have defined that my home page is static and would like to set a slider image for it but can not figure it out. I have set a “Featured Image” for the page thinking that this is how you would select your home page slider image, but this does not work and still the generic 1170 x 480 jpg appears on my home page. How can I change this? Also, I want the slider image to be static and not link to another page.
