Defining a role conditioned by a field

  • I have to assign a role according to a determined field
    I need a command like:
    $type = bp_get_member_profile_data( ‘field=type’ );
    if($type == ‘pippo’)
    …then assigns the role of contributor

    Could you help me?
    I use buddypress
