define(‘DB_CHARSET’, ‘utf8’); – why?

  • I was wondering why the db charset was defined it the wp-config file?

    The reason I ask is my blog seems to work perfectly well without it. The only apparent effect it has is to make moving servers awkward, because many characters in the DB get corrupted during the transfer due to encoding compatibility problems. (That is, in fact, my wp-config has it commented out).

    It seems to cause more trouble than it’s worth. Does it?
