• Hi all,

I’m trying to access my website but the usual wp-login.php is not loading. Instead I get a browser specific prompt that says:

    Authentication Required
A username and password are being requested by https://www.unisca.org. The site says: “wp-login.php”
    Username:
    Password:

I am able to fill the fields after Username and Password, but the usual combination does not work. I can’t recover the password because there is no option to do this in the prompt i get instead of the wp-login.php .

Is there a way to get the wp-login.php to load or recover password some other way?

  • Hello!

It really depends on your site, but the login prompt window does not come from WordPress itself (unless there is some security plugin that put it in place). If you have access to the WordPress files on your server (through FTP or some file manager tool), open the wp-admin directory, and look for a .htaccess file. Try to rename it to something different, and try to log in now. You should contact your system admin about it, because that file is responsible for many other things too, and you need only to remove the password protection of that directory.

You can get more info about what happens here on this link

Let me know if this solved the issue, or if you have any more questions about this, I am always happy to help!

    Hi Balint!

Thank you for the quick reply. Very useful information, will try this as soon as I contact the hosting company for the details. The account has been set up 14 years ago by someone else, so will take a while before I am able to FTP directly into the server. Will definately let you know what happens next!

    Cheers,
    Philip

I am glad that I could be of help ??
