Default to Related Post in Drop Down

to answer my own question:

When editing the field under Pods Admin:
Advanced Tab
Default Value
put in the ID of whatever related post you want that to be.

I would still like it better if I could make it default to whatever is at the top of the list (for example, if I have the list sorted by most recent, then the most recent one will be the default).

You could always create your own functionality for this using filters:
