Default sort order value to max+1?

All of the new posts are being created with a sort order value of
0.I would prefer the new posts are automatically positioned to the end of the list. Is there a hook where I can get in there to calculate the initial sort order value?
I figure I need to select the max value currently set for that post type and then set the new value to +1 of that.
