I have recently become aware that I can no longer set the default new user role to Subscriber as I used to. It now needs to be set to Author or it comes up with a big red message saying:

User role must be set to Author for correct user permissions to apply!
Settings>General>New User Default Role> SET TO “Author”
Please also check your current user roles

Is this some change in the WP core? Or is it being caused by a plugin I’m using (e.g. social logins)?

Is it secure to have unknown users with Author permissions? I don’t like it even though I have over 30 of them now and nothing terrible has happened yet.

  • No, this is not something with wordpress. This sounds more like one of your plugins acting up.

What plugin did you recently install? or which plugins would require user interaction on that level?

The most likely culprit is SuperSocializer which is providing my social login functionality.

ahhh. may want to check out their support forums to see if anyone else is having an issue with this.

Personally I would not like the idea of users being defaulted to Author. Although you can set it up to where posts can’t be made unless you authorize it, that does kinda open a window for spam that you would need to find a way to close.

No, not Super Socializer generating this message. Is there a way to force WP to display which plugin or component is generating a warning message?

It’s OK, I’ve found out now this is a function of the theme I’m using. Still don’t know why but at least I know what.
