Default media upload location problem

I tried to add this to wp-config.php to change the URL of my uploads

define( ‘UPLOADS’, ”.’files’ );

But then all images uploaded wouldn’t show. So I deleted the line of code but they still wouldn’t show. Then I tried replacing the .php file with the original one but that didn’t work.
