default media size is medium

The default size that gets inserted is set by WordPress core, and not the individual theme.

The easiest solution will probably be to increase the size of “medium” images under Settings > Media – that when when your user adds an image, it will be larger, even though it’s still the “medium” image size.

Outside of that, you might be able to write a custom filter or plugin to modify the core behavior, but that would be a lot more involved ??
