Default gallery thumbnails over 500px

trying to display the images in my posts using the default wordpress gallery tag at a width of 650px but the thumbnail size in the media settings seems to have a limit of 500px width. I’ve got a feeling i need to tweak the wp-includes/media.php file but i cant be sure exactly what needs amending. or is there a more simple way of doing this?
