Media Deduper works fine for me when used via “Upload New Media”.

But when drag’n’dropping a media file into an empty block in the visual editor (Gutenberg) which also results in the creation of a media page behind the scenes, Media Deduper seems to intervene technically, but there is no proper user feedback!

The preview image is shown in place (this happens client side in the DOM I assume) but the “upload progress indicator” (a spinner) goes on forever.

When you ignore the stuck process and nevertheless click “Publish” or “Update” then the page is saved and the duplicate image is NOT there.

So obviously Media Deduper prevented the media upload of a duplicate media. But there is no proper user feedback.

It simply should use the same error message as in “Upload New Media”, ideally with my proposed improvements as a floating element, in the notification area that WordPress foresees for these.

  • Hi @abitofmind,

Thanks for flagging this! We’re aware there are some “opportunities for improvement,” shall we say, when it comes to using the Block Editor to upload media. We actually consider this an even higher priority to tackle than your proposed improvements to the more traditional admin message and hope to have a better UX for within the Block Editor in the not-too-distant future (I hope).

    Thanks again,
    Ben

    Hi Ben,
I totally agree that inserting images via block editor should be the nr1 method. And hence also your nr1 effort of the two improvements.

But nevertheless improving the general error message would be good, because that way you ensure, no matter by which method you upload images (maybe there are even more by different plugins) you get a meaningful and useful error message.

And when tackling Gutenberg and images please note there is currently an ugly bug regarding image title metadata which I reported which until fixed will cause me to insert to media library first and only then to the block editor.
