    Hi PVWD
    We’re self hosted.

My question is whether adding plugins to disable trackbacks and various DDOS prevention tools is even necessary after upgrading to 4.0.

    Absolutely, The attacks never stop.
    check Ithemes Security Plugin
there are numerous settings which you will need to address after install. You can disable xml-rpc, hide back end, brute force protection network, and much more.

You will carefully need to go through the setting.
Please note you need to be knowledgeable here.
Just checking the wrong box if you are unaware will bring your site down.

Have access to the back end if you need to disable the plugin if you run into this scenerio. Or test on a test site or sandbox if you have one.

    Thanks Amado,
I use Server Press for local testing and do have access to the back end.
I’ll check out the plugin over the next week or so.

Some of this may be moot since we’ll be migrating to WPEngine and I they run some automated checks.
