Is it a good idea to change the default table prefix to something obscure and difficult to guess. I have heard that automated scripts target the WordPress database using the default table prefix, wp_. Changing this to something else protects the site against such attacks.

Changing it AFTER you’ve installed WP is a nightmare. Don’t.

Picking something different BEFORE you install and using it from the start is fine.

And does it matter? Not really. If they’ve got access to your database, the prefix hardly matters.
