DB connection error on install

Wierd! I’ve installed WP lots of times, and never run across this. Te config.php file is accurate, the database is accurate and accessible, and I continue to get a Database Connection error. I’ve tried localhost and the alternate location. I’ve created, updated and reinstalled both WP and the database three times (different names, userids, pwds, but all aligned in the config file).

Same result.

Also disabled the .htaccess fill in the higher-level directory, thinking that might have something to do with this.

Any ideas?
