Day of week check

I’m new to WordPress, and trying to find a function that allows me to test what day of the week it is (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc.). I can’t find a function that will actually return the literal day of the week, though — only the date/time. It needs to occur outside the loop.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
