dateformat for custom field

Is there a way to modify the output of a date custom field (YYYY-MM-DD), like the creation date with the shortcode parameter dateformat?

Any hint where and how to modify the plugin code to achieve this?

I know that I need to add date(“d.m.Y”, strtotime($date)); somewhere.
