Date tag input area works in chrome but not internet explorer

I have created a enquiry form that includes the following tags:
name; tel; email; text input and finally date.The Date input field on the form when viewed and submitted in chrome works perfectly. It has the dd/mm/yyyy in the text field and a drop down arrow on the right for you to choose the correct date, so either options are available.
In internet explorer (I’m using v11) there is no dd/mm/yyyy showing and no little right drop down arrow. I’ve tried inputting the date manually with all sorts of different combinations, with spaces, without spaces, dd and mm the other way round; year first etc. Nothing works, it always refuses to send stating “the date form seems invalid”.
Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this or get round it? I could make it just a free text box, but as it’s a booking service for a taxi company, they want it to be more accurate than that.
