I cleared cache directly from server but still got the problem… maybe there’s a file to modify or delete… nobody know how to go on?!? Seems a simple issue…

maybe there’s a file to modify or delete…

@nicolafurini No, there is no file to modify or delete. You need to figure out what is wrong with your server that it is preventing you from clicking the update button and having it go through. You need to talk to your hosting service.

Besides, I assume that you mean “clear cache” under the assumption that I use some type of WP Cache plugin. I DO NOT. So your assumptions are wrong.

@festusdog I am not talking about a plugin. Cache comes in many forms. Your browser has a cache. You can have a cache in a plugin. Servers have caches. There are proxy caching systems like CloudFlare.

Somewhere, on your server, something is preventing you from having that update button click “go through” as it were. Until you find out what that is, then your problem will not be solved. You need to look at the server logs, or ask your host to do that for you.

Original point of view… system was working fine with last, previous WP version (4.9)… then, suddenly with 5.0 version my server is gone in holiday… can’t you consider that maybe something is affering this 5.0 new version?

@nicolafurini Yes, I understand your point of view. However, I also know how the code works, and how the update process works, and how servers work. This is not a problem that is 5.0 specific, it’s a general problem that can happen with updates and specific server configurations.

If you want to bypass the upgrade process, and you have access to phpMyAdmin, you can change your wp_options settings. Change the db_version option to 43764 and it will not send you to the button anymore.

    Well, that’s a solution…! Thanks!

In other installation, i solve the problem in this way: i renamed the wp-content/cache folder (cache_bak), then i complete automatic update process, process finished in few seconds… finally, i renamed the cache folder again (from cache_bak to cache)… and i ha frontend and backend working fine…

nicolafurini said it all, and so have I.

Never an issue before 5.0, and that goes back many years and many updates.

We will see whether more users have this problem over the next weeks and months.

Also, browser cache was ~~OBVIOUSLY~~ not an issue here, thus I did not consider it as part of any serious relevant discussion. You seem to assume that (we) are not experienced with server config, apache, php, or WP installations in general, and that is simply not an assumption to make.

    Same issue here…

    Same problem here.

I tried the advice from @otto42 but now I can’t access my dashboard, all I get is a screen telling me my WordPress Database is already up to date.

    Help!

@hilarylittle Right. You should not be getting that screen, because you should be clearing your cache on the server so that it stops incorrectly redirecting you to the update database screen.

@otto42 Quite a binary answer. A world spread CMS like WordPress in need to deal with manual cache clearing is like saying that you first need to learn to forge a fork in order to eat without hands. Anyway, I’ve been happy to have some knowledge about forge and fork. I’ve cleared the cache folder server side and voila !. Thanks a lot but it’s still a bad idea to forget less skilled people (not about yourself, was surprised by kinda error after years of WordPress usage).

@bafouille Not really, because that cache doesn’t actually come with WordPress. Taking other third-party software into account isn’t something that can be done all the time.

WordPress doesn’t have such a cache built in. So, you know, turn things like that off before updating.

I’m having this exact problem and have absolutely no idea how to fix it. ??

I’ve spend hours searching and trying and I’m completely out of my depth as I’m not very techy.

I’ve cleared the cache with my host, cloudflare and browser. I’ve tried deactivating plugins from the files in cpanel and I get an error telling me the file is empty but when I click it the plugins are there.
I’ve had masses amounts of registered users that looks like spam, but I only found them tonight when I logged in to my emails with my browser. They didn’t come through to my phone and I’m worried sick that my site has been hacked.

My website is https://www.tpgifts.co.uk if somebody can advise me on what to do I would be forever grateful.
