Database update eliminated Disqus

I tried to view disqus comments via the WordPress Comments/Disqus menu (realizing it hasn’t worked for a while). The page said to click on the button to update the Disqus database. Did that and it switched to a page that says “Go to Disqus Moderation”. Problem is now Disqus no longer appears on my WP blog. The javascript counter after home page posts stopped working and the comment form offered in the single posts is the WP default (see example https://www.allthingsdemocrat.com/2015/01/bill-moyers-signing-off-into-retirement/). And none of the previous comments are showing. I tried deactivating and activating the disqus plugin but no luck. What was the database update that started the problem? Was that my local database or at Disqus?
What gives?
