Database restore results in lost settings

    I recently tested a wordpress database backup using a test site that only I have access to via a .htaccess config:

    1. Configured test site (wordpress 3.8.1), everything working as expected.
    2. Perform database export using phpMyAdmin.
    3. Restore database using phpMyAdmin using file created in step 2.
    4. Subsequently the media browser has lost all thumbnails, several plugins believe they were recently installed for the first time. Settings from my SEO Yoast plugin are completely gone.

    Any ideas what is happening here? Why does a database restore corrupt things in this fashion?
