I created a wordpress site for a client about 6 months ago. I get an email from the client today saying he’s been trying to login into his site and he can’t.
So i check it out and i’m getting an error establishing a database connection for the site and the admin area.
I logged on via FTP and looked at the config.pho file, thinking maybe he over-wrote it or something. The file had different login/name/pw then what my records say.

So I changed the fields to what my records show are correct for the database and uploaded it. tried the site again and it wanted to reinstall wordpress.

it seems that everything is gone.

What could have caused this to happen? I haven’t touched the site since i completed 6 months ago. Is it possible the client mucked something up?

    any advice/thoughts appreciated.

    Some thoughts:

    – You checked your server. How about checking your database? Are the tables still there? Could the webhost service reset something which affected username and password to DB?

    – I hope you installed a DB backup plugin

i checked mysql and it is showing the database name that i discovered in the config.php file on the server.
    Not the one i created.
    I am really confused.

Contact webhost if they changed anything.
Ask client if he/she allowed full access in webhost to friend/child/etc.
Did you check if there are WP tables in DB with new name?

i just got off the phone with them. I didn’t ask them if they changed anything but asked about them doing a restore. They have a restore point of sunday, which i am not sure will help. I’ll ask them if something changed that would cause this to happen.

Yes, there are wordpress tables with the DB name.
Will ask client about kids, etc having access, but i doubt this guy would admit if he even suspected he or someone he knows did something wrong.

Sunday restore of server and database is better than nothing. Having said that, you should backup current-database-with-different-name if you can access it before Sunday restore kicks in.

In addition, after restore, you would do your client a favor by changing username and password to following:
    – WP install
    – Webhost service
    – Database name and username and just change info in wp-config.php accordingly
    – FTP

That way, whoever had extra access to client’s install won’t be able to play havoc anymore.
