After months of trouble free operation I am now getting the message “Error establishing database connection” when trying to access my site. All users/guests get this as well. It’s down from no obvious cause. I made no changes, anywhere, to cause it.

To make matters worse, my hosting company has Enya on their hold music rotation.

I can ftp in just fine and it looks intact. I just have no clue, here..

  • Well starting with your host was the right thing to do–grin and bear the music ??

Of course, you could log in to your hosting control panel and see if you can use phpMyadmin to access your databases. If that works, make sure your wp-config.php is still showing the correct values.

Thanks MichaelH, I did in fact try logging into my control panel and that failed as well. After an unproductive hour on hold, the problem went away as mysteriously as it appeared. It must have been an issue on the host’s end somewhere. It was just a bad time of day for my site to go down, when I’m trying to build it up right now following a lot of successful local election coverage!!

It’s still worth a call, email, letter, to confirm outage and ask for some recompense–at the very least ask for different music while on hold!
