Breadcrumb NavXT has shipped with the Schema.org breadcrumbList markup since 5.3.0 (released over 4 years ago). You will need to update your calling code to the recommended calling code and change your breadcrumb templates to be schema.org compatible. If you haven’t modified your Breadcrumb NavXT settings, or have only modified a couple of them, the easiest way to update the breadcrumb templates is to do a settings reset from within the help menu in the Breadcrumb NavXT settings page.

In my case, I did need to update the wrapping div. But that wasn’t enough.

I didn’t see a “reset” per se — and I ended up just uninstalling, removing, and then reinstalling the plugin. I noticed that that changed the template — added the “itemListElement” property as it needs to be. I was then able to get to the next stage in the validation within Google Search Console.

Uninstalling and reinstalling effectively does the same thing, though I recommend using the reset method instead. The reset button under Help > Import/Export/Reset will reset your settings (see the following screenshot: https://ps.w.org/breadcrumb-navxt/assets/screenshot-6.png?rev=1058520).

@mtekk the reset method works great.

The only question is: after I apply reset, the Google Structured Data Checking Tool stops detecting “Breadcrumb” items.

I mean, the tool warning “data-vocabulary.org schema deprecated” it’s fixed after reseting the plugin, but I lose the whole Breadcrumb item type.

Is this the expected behavior? Or should I do additional steps to keep the “Breadcrumbs” schema items like before?

@newbee_sue After resetting the options, you will still need to update the wrapping HTML element that the Breadcrumb NavXT output is contained. See the “Default” calling code presented in this article: https://mtekk.us/archives/guides/calling-the-breadcrumb-trail/ for a reference of what the wrapping HTML element needs to look like.

As mentioned above, you will need to:

We seem to have the same problem as @genweb

We started to get the “data-vocabulary.org schema deprecated” error in GSC so did the reset via the help menu. The breadcrumbs still appear on our site (eg. https://www.turkeysforlife.com/2019/02/turkish-green-lentil-soup-recipe.html), but Google doesn’t seem to ‘see’ them at all any more. ie they don’t appear at all now when tested in the Structured Data Testing Tool.

I tried importing the schema xml file as per this article, but nothing seems to help.

What am I doing wrong?

Check your template PHP files and replace the function call with the Schema compatible code like this:

After it, Google Schema Checker will recognice your BreadcrumbList element.

Thanks for trying to help @genweb – but when we add that code to functions.php it breaks our site. Guess we’ll just have to live without the schema ??

@turkeysforlife the code @genweb can’t be added to your theme’s functions.php, it needs to go into your main theme files where bcn_display() was called before. The HTML element that wraps the call to Breadcrumb NavXT needs to have the Schema.org BreadcrumbList format identifiers and not the old data-vocabulary.org identifiers as you had before. This will likely require modifying one or more of your theme’s files.
