This is a real head-scratcher for me. I’m helping a friend learn how to use her self-hosted blog, but today we logged on and the entire dashboard looks like it’s a wiki—no widgets, the formatting is all messed up, and it’s nearly impossible to use anything. I took a screenshot posted here.

Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this? I’ve never seen anything like it. Perhaps deactivating all the plug-ins and starting from scratch would fix it and return the back end to normal? Or should I just reinstall wordpress? If I do a new install of 3.3.1, should I use FTP or do you think it’s safe to use the back end to initiate the reinstall?

    Thanks for any help!

Update: I thought maybe one of the plugins had an update that would correct this problem, so this morning I ran the automatic updater. No change. I then deactivated all plugins except Akismet—still no change. I changed themes, but the back-end continued to be this strange, stripped-down, unusable display. I did the automatic re-install of WordPress from the updates page—and the problem persists.

My friend is using TheCotton theme. The only thing I can think of after this is doing a re-install of wordpress via FTP. Any thoughts?
