• Be prepared for a rant…

I have a self-hosted WordPress site that is my business, so the running of it is vital. About 3 weeks ago, I began getting the odd time-out when I was publishing things, or saving drafts. I’d have to go back and refresh and hope a) it saved my work, and b) it would actually publish this time. This became more and more regular, until it was happening about 90% of the time.
I tried to contact WordPress, who said I should contact my web hosting. I contacted GoDaddy, who ran through all the usual troubleshooting and tests (such as disabling plugins, trying different themes, computers, internet connections, browsers). We did all the error log stuff and they said there was nothing wrong, they got me to do a million and one things but nothing worked whatsoever. The problem began to get worse, as my whole dashboard was crashing for a couple of minutes at a time, and I was now no longer able to save/publish any posts or pages at all. It was temperamental whether I was even able to log in. I then had GoDaddy sending me tons of links from Google and the WordPress forums of people who were having the same problems and error codes (ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE in Chrome), I tried everything these suggested and STILL nothing.
Finally out of the blue I was able to update and save new posts without issue, although different browsers gave me different results. But the “pages” section was still REALLY problematic, which is very annoying because I have two pages I regularly update and haven’t been able to. I also had the dashboard not loading properly (as in where all the menus are disjointed and in weird places, stacked all the way down the page, like when your browser hasn’t loaded it properly). No amount of refreshing would fix that. I tried reinstalling the latest version of WordPress (automatic not manual) and all my problems were solved for about 20 seconds before they screwed up again.

I really, REALLY don’t want to reinstall WordPress manually. I am really busy as it is trying to keep my business afloat, and having the site down while I tried to re-do it and then essentially starting from scratch with stats and stuff and reinstalling everything – I have built this up and I REALLY don’t want to mess with it. I don’t have the time or the patience.

Lots of people have said it’s the latest version of WordPress causing the problems. I want to request WordPress to install an older version of the software on my site in the same way I would normally update, without messing with any of my files etc.

So, to recap: Nothing else has worked, pages section still not working at all, dashboard page is screwed and temperamental, the server is fine and it’s a case of time-outs all over the place. Please help, and if someone asks me once more if I’ve disabled all my plugins, or tried another theme, or another computer, I’m sorry but I’ll have to scream.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.
