• There is this issue occurring constantly on an off over the last few months, which has now occurred continuously for the last 3 days where the dashboard is extremely extremely slow. I constantly get that “Connection lost….” error and often dashboard items like Posts, Edit Post, Plugins, Themes etc don’t open unless I click it twice.

This has happened plenty of times before, but regularly only now and coincidentally after the 4.0 wordpress update.

I believe the problem could possibly be with the WP Super Cache plugin.

Has anyone faced this issue? Could anyone guide me through what options should be selected for the Super Cache Plugin?

  • I experienced the same thing as @sami_ootb. It is starting to appear after upgrading wordpress to version 4.0
I’m using the W3 Total Cache plugin.

One site explain: WordPress Heartbeat and heavy admin-ajax.php usage

The WordPress Heartbeat API uses /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php to run AJAX calls from the web-browser. Which in theory sounds awesome, as WordPress can keep track of what’s going on in the dashboard.

However this can also start sending excessive requests to admin-ajax.php which can lead to high CPU usage. Anytime a web-browser is left open on a page using the Heartbeat API, this could potentially be an issue.

    Could Heartbeat that caused it?

I also found this plugin that provides a method of turning the WordPress heartbeat off as well as change some settings.
