Hello. I’ve read very many posts that are similar to my problem, but am still unsure how to proceed. Using Theme 2014/Arvixe is my host/carkeekpark.org. Plugins from the Dashboard leads me to a page reporting Not Found. Can’t look at my plugins, can’t install or remove them. All lead to Not Found except Editor and Editor oddly takes me to the plugin-editor.php with askismet.php open in the editor. I’m not using that plugin.

What I would like to do is switch to a different Theme (I only have 2013, 2014, 2105 loaded), delete Theme 2014, reinstall it, then switch back to it in hopes that it repairs this theme. However, when I click Add New Theme, not only are Featured Popular and Latest all blank, there is no Search form – all of which were fully functional a few days ago.

I’ve added no new plugins, but around the time I noticed my current problem, I switched the Under Construction plugin off, making the site live. I have no idea if that is the instigator since I have been switching it on and off all along to let others have a look. As I mentioned, I can’t get to any plugins to disable them (Not Found via the Dashboard).

I don’t really need to go to Plugins or add a New Theme right now, but someday I will.

    What would you do?

    Thank you,
    ~BTC

    That seems rather odd.

Try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

Thanks James. Do you know how may times I’ve read delete/replace/except…/so don’t forget…

You and many a moderator keep repeating this throughout these hundreds of like problems.

    You must be weary.

Ok … and, have you tried it?

I wouldn’t have recommended it if I didn’t think it would work.

James… I’m a city park volunteer doing this and I automatically love you…

I’m going to suck it up this weekend and try this.

Excellent, please let us know how it goes!

If you still have trouble, there are more things to try, but this is most often the cause of whole Dashboard sections returning as Not Found.

Salmon are nigh-on about to return as they are want to do at Carkeek Park.

Open source coding and volunteer-ism remind me about why I’m about to go walk Piper’s Creek.

When I get back, I’m going to call Arvixe. Before that I’m going to blow out everything because it is a plumbing issue, after all.

James, I wish you a good day!

    Likewise! ??

Just curious; did you get this to work? I’m with arvixe and am having the exact same issue.

Hello James. After extravagant efforts to make contact with Arvixe by phone, Live Chat, and Tickets to get some guidance on how to proceed with your recommendations (re-install WP, but keep wp-config.php and /wp-content/), I finally got a person on the phone today that did not seem to have much cPanel experience in addition to telling me he knew nothing about WP. Recall if you will that I come by this mostly pleasant activity as a volunteer for the Parks council and up until now, I haven’t even needed to get to the site’s plugins since I noticed the problems. But I have some time to try this today.

Though the site gets very regular backups, I downloaded full site, home directory and mysql backups to my local PC today. Also copied wp-config.php and /wp-content/ to a backup folder on the server under /public_html/.

Just to be sure, I will now (1) re-install WP (it’s rather automated thru cPanel) and (2) replace the new wp-config and /wp-content with my backup versions. The last step (2) will reinstate the original 2014 Theme folder and the content that is currently there. And plugins. So if the problem persists after this, then the problem is likely the original 2014 Theme installation or perhaps an original plugin (I have ibs-calender, ultimate-social-media-plus, underconstruction and limit-login-attempts installed with this theme)?

Do I have this about right? I’m nervous.

    Thank you,
    ~Rick

Don’t do the reinstall through cPanel’s installer, it will replace *everything* which is not what you want to do. ??

Try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

Use SFTP, FTP, or the file manager in cPanel to do that.

Thanks James. I’m glad you’re with me so far. If I have this right, you want me to (1) download the compressed WP file from your link above to my local PC, (2) upload it to the host server, (3) extract & install it there into a new folder, then (4) copy & replace all like files in the original folder structure with new ones, except wp-config.php (file) and /wp-content/ (folder).

I know the Earth continues spinning if I screw this up, but I just want to be sure I’m interpreting your patient efforts well enough.

Thank you one more time, James.

    Thread Starter BobTheClock

    (@bobtheclock)

No that’s not right. It should be:

    (1) download the compressed WP file from the Download WordPress link above to local PC
    (2) extract compressed files into a folder on local PC
    (3) except for wp-config.php (file) and /wp-content/ (folder), delete all like-files/folders from server installation of WP rather than overwrite the files with new ones; this is because we need to be certain the originals are replaced completely
    (4) upload new like-files/folders to server location

From my freshly extracted local WP folder, I see that there will be 16 files in the WP root (/public_html/ on my host server) and 2 folders, /wp-admin/ and /wp-includes/ to delete on the server and replace with new copies.

That will leave the original wp-config.php (file) in the WP root (/public_html/ on my host server) and /wp-content/ (folder).

Is that closer to about right? I still haven’t done this.

    ~Rick

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

    Yes, that’s correct. ??

    Thread Starter BobTheClock

    (@bobtheclock)

Well. The Earth is indeed still spinning. (2) above should read “upload WP Zip file to a folder on server and use Extract to extract files” because cPanel File Manager only lets you upload one file at a time. Or, as you suggested James, use FTP. The entire process only takes a few minutes.

That said, it did not work.

I removed the 16 WP root files and 2 WP folder except wp-config.php (file) and /wp-content/ (folder). Then I copied those same files from the fresh WP download to their proper locations.

I then went to the WP Dashboard, was told the database needed to be updated, and then I logged in. Dashboard plugins and Themes return a Not Found page precisely as before.

Since I can’t get to Themes, is there a way I can download 2014 and remove/replace it in a way that is similar to what I was just taught for WP without affecting the content? Other ideas perhaps?

I learned quite a few things James. I’m not disappointed.

    Thanks,
    ~Rick
