    I have a site which has worked fine for a long time.
    This morning I logged in and attempted to upload a pdf into Media but the “crunching” froze. I tried again, it froze. I tried uploading using drag and drop and got “an error occurred in the upload”.
    I then found the dashboard had “gone”.
    Now I can log in (I know I am logging in because if I use the wrong password it tells me but if I use the correct one it does not). However, on logging in I do not get the dashboard though the URL referred to is https://www.xxxxx.co.uk/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.xxxxx.co.uk%2Fwp-admin%2F&reauth=1
    So it seems the redirect is not working after login.
    I have tried renaming the plugins folder to no result.
    I have tried renaming my theme but then only get a blank page.
    I have tried reloading the wp-admin folder from a backup.
    I have no .htaccess file but did try creating one from another site.
    None of these solutions worked.
    And other Admins have the same problem.

    Desperately need help!

  • Hello, bobjgarrett, & welcome. Could you please provide us a site url? That’d be really helpful.

    Also, in your WordPress folder there is often a file called error.log or error_log. If you find such a file w/entry dates that correspond to your error, & if the interpretation eludes you, feel free to post them here so we can have a look. Lastly, it can also be helpful to open your wp-config.php file, either using an FTP (preferably secure FTP) client or your hosting provider’s file manager & change wp_debug from ‘false’ to ‘true’. This causes your site to display errors when you visit. This is a serious security risk, so please leave it in place just long enough to copy-&-paste the errors, then switch it back to ‘false’ again.

    Thanks for suggestions.
    This morning I have reloaded the latest WordPress version by copying the folders and files but the problem still remains.
    The site is https://www.ccrc.co.uk
    There is not error.log or error_log file.
    At present the site has only the plugins needed to enable php processing and to hide an extra menu. I have tried disabling these too but to no result.
    I have used debug mode and got the error list most which is deprecated instructions in the exec-php plugin. However there is also an error “Table ‘wp_options’ is read only”. I don’t recall seeing this yesterday but could this be the problem?

    bobjgarrett, is your site on shared hosting, VPS, or dedicated server? The options table should not be read-only. Does your database user have all privileges on the database?

    The problem is now resolved. Your suggestion of running debug mode identified the problem when I was logging in (previously I had not logged in as debug was running); the problem being that the table wp_options was read only so preventing full login. The ISP subsequently fixed this but has not managed to explain how this arose except that it also affected other clients on the server too.
    Thanks for your input.

    Folks, it would be so helpful if you’d please start your own separate topics, as this 1 has been resolved. To help us better assist you, please provide:
    * Your site url;
    * Your version of WordPress;
    * Whether you’re on shared, VPS, or dedicated hosting, or barring that, please just say you don’t know.
    *A thorough description of the problem. If you can tell us when it started, any events surrounding it, ie, an update, etc, this, too, would be helpful.
    * What you’ve done to try to fix the problem.

    Thank you for your cooperation.
