• Hey

I am a WordPress newb who doesn’t really know much about how the whole system works. A website that I edit (www.northreach.org.au) has recently stopped letting me login to the WordPress dashboard. It simply shows a 500 Internal Server Error, and I don’t get anywhere. This means that currently, I cannot edit the site, because it will not even get as far as a login screen.

I have no idea how to fix this problem. We host this site through a third party, and pay to do so. I’m not sure what other information might be helpful. I am not sure of the exact version of WordPress I am using, as I cannot currently access my Dashboard to even find out. It is at least 4.0 however.

I’m probably posting in the wrong area of the forum but I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me. I’m lost on this one. Email has been sent to the host but I suspect the issue isn’t with them as the site itself is still running and accessible. The WordPress editor just isn’t.

Thanks for any help you can offer in advance,

    Jesse

  • Hi Jesse,

Yes, you are running WordPress 4.0.1. What type of edit did you make? Do you have access to the root folder of your website? IF you do, you can verify that at least wp-login.php exist. If It does not exist, you can download WordPress and copy over the missing files in the root folder.

    Jesse,

    You can login from here:

    Hey edward.jimenez,

Thanks very much for your quick response.

You got me to the login page, but unfortunately, the error seems to crop up even after pressing ‘login’. The login screen seems to not be working after pressing login.

    I am downloading WordPress now.

    Any other ideas?

This is what I see after logging in.

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

hmmmm…Interesting. Did you recently make any changes to the website structure( the WordPress Core files) or to the system in general? Can you provide the error logs?

    Thanks in advance.

I am a super newb to all of this my friend. I don’t even know how to install WordPress to my computer. All I’ve been able to figure out is making pages and building a small part of that site.

I’m not sure I could access the WordPress Core Files if I wanted to, and I am afraid I don’t know how to access any error logs.

I’m sorry, I just didn’t really need to know too much before the login stopped working. I am pretty confident I haven’t gone to anything called the WP Core Files.

I just edit and maintain a small chunk of that website (www.northreach.org.au/ministries/youth) and I haven’t had any problems getting in until recently.

The person who normally takes care of the website at large is difficult to contact. Someone who has accessed the website may have changed something important, I’m not sure.

I see…Well, to tell you the truth Jesse, if you are not the administrator for the site, I would not touch anything because you do not know what changes were made. I think the best thing to do right now is contact the administrator for the site and get the error logs…Do you have access to the server hosting the site? I can try to guide you to get the error logs and maybe we can resolve the issue without the admin.

I have administrative access if that helps? They gave that to me a while back.

I will try to track down the server login. For the time being, thank you for your help. ?? I will post again when I have obtained the server login.

    Thanks again.
