• I tried to update to 4.5 but got error message. Luckily I could go back to former version.

However my dashboard is a total mess and can hardly work with it.

How can I resolve this ?

( I cannot add screenshot of how it looks unfortunately).

You apparently have files missing ( my sons remarks) but I don’t have that. Maybe I do have some styles missing…

Would it be related to the new update 4.5 ??? which I tried, but which failed.

You apparently have files missing ( my sons remarks)

I don’t think that…. but it is a possibility…..As they update wordpress they also update some java libraries…. so I think that they are the cause …..Im really wasting sometimes on this ….. I could not write anything and this have a negative impact on my website…. I really appreciate any indication!!!!

    wish I could help you!

My website displays totally fine and I can make alterations via the Cornerstone plugin I have with my themee x, so that’s not problem.

However I am about to launch an online program and need to fine tune, add pages and make blog posts…which I can’t…

    Frustrating..

    Hope someone here can help

I would have to agree with what @chris3ch said that his son suggested. I have been working with WordPress for ten years and any time I am having these kinds of problems it turns out to be either missing files or edited/damaged/hacked files. I would advise downloading the zip from wp.org then uploading the core files via ftp to replace what is on the server.

If that does not work then I am also stumped because all of my sites that I have updated are running find and I do not have this problem with the admin are.

Hopefully someone else can help if replacing the files does not work.

same appearance as fanatstickmath my site mostly loads and works ok, dashboard is problem, some of the menu items function, I was able to do a post, upload media, then could not publish it because the button seemed hidden behind other active content.

Same with trying to redo the automatic update button, or the update to 4.5 at the bottom of the dashboard page

ramdai…making a back up and then updating to 4.5 solved the problem. I only lost some sidebar widgets which was easily resolved.

Have you contacted your theme support regarding this… mine said there must have been some fils missing, so I thought what the heck I’ll risk updating as I have a back up now. and it worked.

I contacted my host (Ipage) support, and got the message down below these comments–it fixed the problem. Maybe this will help others who know how to fiddle with files directly on the host server

I had asked if there was a backup on my host, and was told there was not, so I purchased the 12.50/year package not thinking it would have a usable backup, with the horse out of the barn already, but maybe they automatically keep backups (whether you pay for them or not)or….i don’t know what else, but it seems to have worked retroactively

whatever, my site dashboard is back up

    Hello Bob,

I have restored the wp-admin folder from the backup and now the WordPress dashboard at: https://www.permaculturebob.com/wp-admin/ is displaying fine. You can upgrade the WordPress application now. Please check once again and if there any issues, let us know.

alternately, here’s a link to a solution James Huff offered me- very similar to what Ipage did

update–The dashboard displays correctly at times, I was able to edit comments, but not publish new posts- as soon as i try it reverts to that convoluted double layer with many controls inaccessible.

also, as soon as I tried to look at a draft post it reverts back and i’m unable to publish because that control is displayed under the others

I was able to click the 4.5 update, but then it reverted and controls became messed up.

I have to do other things now, but would like to know what works for everybody else, I may have to try and muddle through the advice James gave about using fresh files from a new download, didn’t sound that complicated.

I’m guessing the backup was corrupted so whatever allows me to get the appearance of a useful dashboard is still not supported by good code.

this is the thread to look at, James gives good directions, my site finally seems ok

caution, only replace/remove from your server root directory the files in the wp4.5 download (dont remove/replace the content folder or the config.php file of course)

I removed everything first try (hence the value of saving everything in a backup file) and got a 403 error, restored everything back then just replaced the files in wp4.5 and was successful.

Please keep track and don’t do anything that can’t be undone, just in case)
