• I have been asked to apply some changes to a worpress 3.0.1 site made by a web agency; but as I log in into the dashboard as admin only 5 buttons are displayed(posts, media, pages, comments, users), while sections as Appereance, Themes, Plugins, Settings are totally missing. It’s like I’m an admin with limited privileges, like I was an editor. So I’m wondering what could be the problem, maybe what I have is a mod of wordpress where even the admin is not given all the privileges but I think it’s unlikely something like could exist.
I’ve searched the web for similar episodes but I found nothing, so I hope someone could help.
    Thanks for your attention.

  • Are you sure that your login has full Admin status?

Did someone at the agency set up your username/password? Maybe they didn’t quite give you administrator rights.

I’m not sure if I’ve have been given administrator rights, but in the User section I find that the id I use to log in has the admin role. I’m not sure that actually means I’ve that administrator rights.

You could check the wp_users table and see if there is an admin user with an id of 1. You could then use PhpMyadmin to reset the password for that user and use the login to see if it gave you greater access.

I’m loggin in with the user called ‘admin’ who as ID 1 in wp_users. puzzling

What version of WordPress is this?

I’ve written it, it’s 3.0.1 as far I can see in the bottom-right corner.

Sorry. I missed that. I was looking in the right-hand column for the version number. Try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

just in case the theme or a plugin is messing up the Admin area.

I’m wondering maybe dashboard was modified by the agency to avoid the owner of the website to edit unintentionally appereance stuffs; but is it possible? and there should be some hint the version’s been modded.
Thank you anyway for the attention.

    Ok I’m trying

It’s certainly possible but I’d imagine that they would still have left a back door available for their own use. Whilst it’s easy to use FTP for themes & plugins, you can’t activate them or access any of the WP settings without some of those menus.

I wonder if they hacked some of the wp-admin scripts and then used direct urls? Try re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.

I re-uploaded the two directory and now all it’s working correctly, thank you a lot! I could have thought about it! Beside I think they found the hacked scripts on the web for they aren’t that high-end agency and it’s unlikely they write it on their own.

Anyway thank you again for your attention.

Glad to hear that it’s all working properly now. ??
