cut off entries after certain number of characters?

    I want to cut off my entries for example after the 1000 characters, how it could be made?
    I know ‘the_excerpt’ function, but it removes the images, so i don’t want to use it.

    I would like only to have auto entries cut off on archive pages, but left with first image ant etc.. is that possible?
