I just updated my theme on my local computer when I got the following error: An error occurred while updating Customizr: Could not remove the old theme.

Weird thing is it completely deleted my customizr folder. I could just copy the folder back from the live site so no harm done but thought it’s worth mentioning.

I tried again and the same happened. How do I now update my theme? Download the new theme manually and copy into the theme folder?

I’m a little nervous updating the live site now?

  • During a theme update, the theme’s folder is deleted and then a fresh copy of the updated theme is uploaded automatically. So what happened to you is unfortunate but not really a surprise. Sounds like something on your server is stopping the theme update from completing successfully. Since this is a local copy, I’d just download the new theme manually and drop its unpacked folder into wp-content/themes.

Ok thanks Esmi. Can I assume it will be fine updating the live site then? I will off course make a back up.

I would certainly hope it would be OK on a live site but I couldn’t guarantee it 100% because live servers can have problems to. If the 1-click theme upgrade does fail on the live server, you can upload the unpacked theme’s folder to wp-content/themes using FTP. Then you can contact your hosts at your leisure to try and determine what went wrong.
