• Hi, After some trouble getting wordpress installed through my host, fatcow, I am now having other trouble.

When I choose a theme and go to theme editor, the only thing that shows up is some html, but not the buttons where I should be able to change photos etc. Underneath the box with the html, it says “update file” and to the right is a list of the different things to be edited.
But when I choose for example, header, just html shows up in the box, and not the buttons to customize and change the image.

I’ve done a tutorial on wordpress, and according to that everything is very user friendly. I am very frustrated after having so much trouble. Is there a phone number I can call to get some help on this?

  • The Theme editor is just showing you code of a particular theme’s Templates. Before using the Theme editor you might review Themes, Stepping Into Template Tags, Stepping Into Templates, and Template Hierarchy.

You upload photos and other media by using the Media button is Writing a Post or Page.

But what I am saying is that I want to customize my theme and it won’t let me. Shouldn’t I be able to customize my theme in the theme editor?

Is there anyone that can help me over the phone?

Theme customization requires understanding of HTML/CSS (mostly CSS). It is not a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor.

The theme editor in your dashboard just allows you to do change the theme files w/o using FTP (but in most cases you will still need to change the file permission to 777).

You are not going to get free help on a GPL script, especially not over the phone unless you pay some webmaster to talk to you.

You need to modify the css if you want to customize your theme…which means you’ll need to learn css code. I doubt there’s a wordpress help hotline, but I could be wrong…but even if there is, I don’t think it would be used for theme customization.

FYI…Google is a powerful tool for learning css…
