Customizing a child theme

Hello, I’m pretty new to WP but nevertheless I’m studying a little html and css to modify themes. I created a child theme only with style.css. Let’s say that I also want to modify a part of some templates, what are the required steps? I copy and past the template in the child theme directory and then I change it, or there’s another procedure to follow?
