So I have two sites running the same theme (MH Magazine) and a similar but not identical set of plugins, on the same server. On one, the Customizer works as it should; on the other, the Customizer works, for the most part, but the edit shortcuts (those little blue buttons) stopped showing up a couple of versions ago (both sites are on 4.9), and the browser console shows this error:

Uncaught Error: Illegal id for widget partial.
        at f.initialize (customize-preview-widgets.min.js?ver=4.9:1)
        at f.e.Class (customize-base.min.js?ver=4.9:1)
        at f [as constructor] (customize-base.min.js?ver=4.9:1)
        at new f (customize-base.min.js?ver=4.9:1)
        at HTMLDivElement.<anonymous> (customize-selective-refresh.min.js?ver=4.9:1)
        at Function.each (jquery.js?ver=1.12.4:2)
        at a.fn.init.each (jquery.js?ver=1.12.4:2)
        at Object.c.addPartials (customize-selective-refresh.min.js?ver=4.9:1)
        at Function.<anonymous> (customize-selective-refresh.min.js?ver=4.9:1)
        at i (jquery.js?ver=1.12.4:2)

I have tried deactivating all the plugins on the malfunctioning site. The edit shortcuts did not reappear. I have not switched to Twenty Sixteen because I’ve had some bad experiences switching themes (or switching back, actually), but I’m willing to try that — except that the themes on both sites, including the one that’s working properly, are exactly the same, so it doesn’t seem like it’s a theme problem.

Wondering if there are any hints in the console error message that a non-coder like me is missing, or if anyone has any other suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Roger

Thanks, Cindy! That was it. I had a Links widget active in the footer of the problem site (but not on the other working site running the same theme). I deactivated it — and the errors went away, and the edit shortcuts returned. Thank you so much for the reply.
