• When I was trying to filezilla(FTP) my beautiful site to a “live” host, from my MAMP setup, something went wrong. I was reading some dudes instructions online, and it said to change the values from localhost:8888 to the new location. I ended losing the site from local host and it wasn’t viewable online either. I managed to change it back to localhost:8888 and now I can see my wordpress site on my MAMP host… problem is now all the edit buttons are gone from pages, I can no longer use the appearance editor. it is gone… also the customizer is gone too… my question is…. how do i get back to my originally environment so i can edit my word press again… the follow up question then is how to i make this thing go live… without screwing it up again… thanks!!!

  • You won’t like this:
    You revert to the backup you took before you made the move.
    Told you you wouldn’t like it!

    Check:
    – is your WP install complete? eg do the folders wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes exist? If not, reinstall your WP

    – is there a folder wp-content/themes/customizr? If not, reinstall customizr theme.

    – What Theme is the default? Change it to Customizr

    – Check your .htaccess and wp-config.php

    If/When you get your MAMP back, follow these Guidelines especially the Search and Replace part.

    Let us know how you get on. Good Luck!

    I must not have backed it up properly. I did back it up before doing anything. The backup does the exact same thing.

    1. The wp-admin, wp-inclues, and wp-content folders are all there.
    2. customizr theme folder is there.
    3. how do i change default theme?
    4. what do I look for in the .htaccess and wp-config.php files?

    Thanks for guidelines link.

    I’m still hoping someone has a silver bullet for me. I really appreciate your help.

    Can anyone tell me what happen? I seem to have a perfectly running website, that functions exactly as I designed it with the help of WordPress. It runs fine on MAMP, but I would like to be able to edit it as needed moving forward. I figured at some point I could go live with this thing, then still be able to edit it in MAMP moving forward, with periodic uploads to live host.

    Go to Appearance>Themes in the Dashboard. You probably have twentytwelve or twentythirteen in there. Activate them, test, then Activate Customizr again.

    Your MAMP strategy is fine, that’s exactly how I work.

    You could use pastebin to store your .htaccess and wp-config.sys and publish the links here so someone can look at them.

    I think that might be my problem. I don’t know how to get back to dash board. when I used to go to localhost:8888 i would see the dashboard, then I had access to the customize and everything.. now when I go there, I get two folders.. my backup and my working directory. when I go into either one, I get the page as it would sit “live” on the web… make sense.

    Not easy to diagnose.

    Check your wp-config.sys. Does it have a line:

    /** MySQL hostname */
    define('DB_HOST', 'localhost');

    ?

    Try reinstalling WP again?

    @joshuaocarter

    I just deleted your last post – that wp-config.php file contains password info that should never be posted on a very public forum. I’m not sure if your site is on a live server, but in any case, it’s not a good idea to post that kind of thing here.

    (@joshuaocarter)

    I was aware that it has password on it. it is not a live site. it’s on my local MAMP. I will put a real password on it before going live.

    Ive posted it again.. with password removed. Is there any other code I can post here for review? I’m struggling here. I guess I might just have to redo the wordpress from scratch. i have no idea what i did to break it. i need to edit it more before going live, and i will need to maintain it later. i cant get dashboard back up

    I think I figured out what went wrong.. but still dont clearly understand it. I redid the site..and when I went to mack back up. I created another folder with a different name. That caused me to have the same issue as before. It looks like I probably renamed the file and didn’t realize that it broke links in code. I wish I understood this part better. I’m affraid I might screw myself up again. ?? I’m going to read and read before i do anything again. Any tips? I see if I click the -settings->general button in the dashboard there are a couple URL entried there.
    Wordpress Address (URL) https://loclhost:8888/untitled%20folder
    Site Address(URL) https://localost:8888/untitled%20folder

    So I want the website to have a better name that “Untitled folder”. Can I change one of these, without losing my ability to edit and reach the dashboard?

    Yes, the localhost is a reference to your PC or Mac and references have to change when you upload to the host.

    Read those guidelines carefully and you should be OK. First time can be a bit scary. And remember:

    If/When you get your MAMP back, follow these Guidelines especially the Search and Replace part
